MW-Class Systems

Our MW-Class Systems scale easily up to 10 MW, giving you complete control of your operations – and your budget.

To make a utility-scale system, the standard 7 kW-rated VRB® cell stacks are assembled like Lego® pieces to build 200 kW modules – which in turn are scalable up to 10 MW megawatt-size systems. A primary advantage of the VRB-ESS® is the separation of the power component and the storage component of the system (see figure). Once these large systems are built, they can be simply and readily upgraded at low incremental costs – with energy storage capacity added by increasing the volume of electrolyte held in tanks, and with power capacity added by increasing the number of cell stacks or modules.

Despite their size, Prudent's MW-class systems are safe and eco-friendly. They are quiet and produce negligible air or waste emissions, simplifying environmental permitting. In addition, they operate at cooler temperatures and are less sensitive to ambient temperatures than traditional systems.

The MW-class systems deliver high performance:

  • Availability of greater than 99%.
  • Discharge and charge greater than 100,000 times, or 10 years without material deterioration in system efficiencies.
  • System round-trip AC to AC efficiencies of 65 - 75%, depending on use and location.
  • Theoretical charge/discharge window of 1.7:1 (option of 1:1), allowing off-peak charging for on-peak dispatch at a fraction of the time required by other battery systems – ideal for wind generation applications.
  • Cross-mixing of electrolytes does not lead to the contamination of electrolytes.
  • Indefinite life of electrolyte (no disposal or contamination issues).
  • Once charged, the electrolyte remains fully charged with low self-discharge.
